ZombieWalk Columbus 2010: Raising the Dead to Feed the Living!

Ever have the desire to dress like a zombie and participate in a mass street theater performance, both while raising awareness for charity? You’ll get your chance this Saturday, May 29th at 5:00 p.m.!

This almost two mile walk and mass street theatre begins and ends at Goodale Park and is opened to all. Participants are urged to bring canned food donations to be delivered to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

The official Zoombie Walk 2010 Afterparty is for Zombies 18 and over and will be held at Outland on Liberty, 95 Liberty Street, Columbus from 9a-2a. There is a $5.00 cover.

This event is definitely a site to see!

The Homeless Families Foundation is a family shelter in Columbus, Ohio. It provides shelter and support services for homeless families and an extensive tutoring and enrichment program for homeless and at-risk school age children.

On April 17th, Plant the Seed of Hope for homeless families in Columbus. Held at the Dowd Education Center, the event will include music by Arnett Howard, art by David Hostetler in live auction, food and beverages. Valet parking available.

Individual ticket are $100. Couple tickets are $175. Tickets can be purchased on-line.

Each year, the finest AMA marketing minds in central Ohio converge to review, rate, discuss and laugh at the best and worst commercials from the Big Game. It’s the biggest TV ad day of the year and the AMA promises the commentary and company will be worth the price of admission!

The luncheon will be moderated by Artie Isaac and will also feature a panel of industry experts. This is a great opportunity to see what is in store for advertising this year!

This weekend you can take a walk, and not in the cold! We found the perfect opportunity to get out of the house, get some exercise and take part in making a difference for those affected by Epilepsy.

The 7th Annual Stroll for Epilepsy raises awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio.  Their goal is to raise $100,000. All money raised stays local! The Epilepsy Foundation of Central Ohio’s goal is to enhance the quality of life for those affected by Epilepsy and to increase the understanding of Epilepsy in central Ohio.

During this family friendly walk through Polaris Fashion Place walkers make their way through the 2-story mall, while enjoying activities and possible prizes.

Columbus media personalities put their competitive microphones down and come together for an entire day to raise money for the Red Cross and Haiti.

This one-day event takes place:

Local TV, Radio, and Print personalities, along with government officials and the American Red Cross, will be on hand to accept cash and check donations all day. Attendees will stay warm and dry in their cars to donate at the drive-through event. Checks should be made payable to American Red Cross Haiti Relief.

The American Red Cross is accepting donations now:

1. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).

2. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org. They can choose to designate their contribution to the International Response Fund or for the Haiti response specifically.

3. Donors can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a ten dollar donation to the Red Cross. The funds will go to support the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

This weekend from 8a – 2p, Charity Newsies will once again be taking it to the Columbus area streets to sell their special edition newspaper. Rain or shine, snow or sleet, Newsie members will be in their white coveralls selling papers on street corners all over Franklin county. This will be the 103rd year that Charity Newsies raises funds to provide clothing and shoes to needy children of Franklin County to keep them in school during the winter months. During the 2008-2009 school year, Charity Newsies clothed over 14,000 kids and this year they hope to clothe over 15,000.

I love the story of how the charity came to be  . . .

Now 103 years later, over 700 members keep this tradition alive!  Look for your Newsie member at the Paper Sale this weekend. If you don’t see a Newsie member you can make a donation online using Paypal. Donations can also be mailed to: Charity Newsies, 4300 Indianola Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43214.

100% of your donation goes to help purchase new clothes for kids.

An evening showcasing art from youth participants in Directions for Youth and Families’ Short Stop and Ohio Avenue Youth Centers, as well as art from local artists. Along with the exhibits, a silent auction will take place to help raise funds for these non-profit organizations. Open Your HeART For Kids also includes live entertainment and refreshments that will round out the event in time for guests to continue their evening at the Gallery Hop.

Support over 7,500 youth served annually so that they learn to make positive choices, imagine new possibilities, learn skills for future success and lead constructive lives.

And by song, I actually mean concert.

“Star Wars: In Concert” is a unique multimedia event that combines composer John Williams’ unforgettable music, performed by a live symphony orchestra and chorus, with specially edited footage from all six Star Wars films.

Accompanying the concert will be an exhibit of costumes, props, production artwork and behind-the-scenes videos from the Lucasfilm Archives at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch.  Many items have been stored for as long as 30 years, unseen until they were last in front of a camera — until now.

The event, which began its national tour October 1 in Anaheim, California, will visit Nationwide Arena tonight!  The concert begins at 7:30 pm.

As a gal who is not too ashamed to admit she has pretended to be Princess Leia Organa fighting off Imperial Storm Troopers and Jabba the Hut (and that was just last week!) –

I am thrilled to say that I will not only be in attendance at the concert tonight….I will be filming the exhibits and conducting audience interviews on behalf of Greatest City of All and my movie site, FlickChick.TV.

Seriously…..I’m happier than a Wookiee with a cookie.  Just sayin’.

Tuesday, December 1st is World Aids Day and Columbus AIDS Task Force wants you to show support by picking up your fork and chowing down to help fight HIV!

A Reason To Dine is a city-wide, fund raising event for the Columbus AIDS Task Force, as well as a way to create change here in Central Ohio, by encouraging people to learn about HIV and its affects our community.

Many Columbus area restaurants are participating in a Reason To Dine by donating a portion of their proceeds and distributing information on HIV.

Established in 1984, Columbus AIDS Task Force (CATF) is a full-service, community-based, non-profit AIDS Service Organization providing comprehensive care services, educational programs and an HIV testing program. CATF’s mission is to fight the spread of HIV; reduce its transmission, stigma and the resulting discrimination through education and awareness; and provide quality services to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Before you eat too much turkey on Thanksgiving Day and the tryptophan kicks in making you too sleepy to move, why not participate in one of Columbus Turkey Day running events. You’ll be doing good for you and for some local non-profit organizations.

1. The Turkey Trot is Columbus’ oldest Thanksgiving Day races going strong for almost 20 years. This year’s event raises money for Easter Seals Central Ohio chapter. The goal is to raise $20,000 for Easter Seals efforts to educate and provide services to families of Autistic children. The race starts and finishes at the Shops on Lane Avenue. 2. The Pilgrim’s 4 Miler is a run around Polaris Fashion Place and raises money and awareness for children with Cerebral Palsy. Funds raised from the event will benefit the Luke Billings Foundation. Race time is 9:00 a.m. For more details visit the web site.
3. Flying Feather 4 Miler is a run in Dublin. In it’s fourth year the run raises money and awareness for Toys for Tots and the 2nd & 7 Foundation. The race starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs through the Glacier Ridge Metro Park. Marines will be at the race site collecting unwrapped, unopened toys. For more details visit the web site.
