This weekend from 8a – 2p, Charity Newsies will once again be taking it to the Columbus area streets to sell their special edition newspaper. Rain or shine, snow or sleet, Newsie members will be in their white coveralls selling papers on street corners all over Franklin county. This will be the 103rd year that Charity Newsies raises funds to provide clothing and shoes to needy children of Franklin County to keep them in school during the winter months. During the 2008-2009 school year, Charity Newsies clothed over 14,000 kids and this year they hope to clothe over 15,000.

I love the story of how the charity came to be . . .

“It was a blustery, cold day in early December 1907 when a ragged newsboy stood on the corner of Broad and High hawking his papers. “Paper! Get your paper!”, he cried. From inside a restaurant, three men watched as people sped by the young boy, barely noticing him.

The gentlemen felt sorry for the lad, brought him inside where it was warm, and took his papers with cries of “Its all for charity!” They sold every paper for as much as they could and sent the boy home with more money than he had ever seen.

That same year, on the Sunday before Christmas, 50 business men took to the streets with a special edition of the newspaper to sell for charity. They took in $702.42 and used 100% of it to buy clothing, food, coal and other necessities for needy families.”

Now 103 years later, over 700 members keep this tradition alive! Look for your Newsie member at the Paper Sale this weekend. If you don’t see a Newsie member you can make a donation online using Paypal. Donations can also be mailed to: Charity Newsies, 4300 Indianola Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43214.

100% of your donation goes to help purchase new clothes for kids.

“Star Wars: In Concert” is a unique multimedia event that combines composer John Williams’ unforgettable music, performed by a live symphony orchestra and chorus, with specially edited footage from all six Star Wars films.

The event, which began its national tour October 1 in Anaheim, California, will visit Nationwide Arena tonight! The concert begins at 7:30 pm.

As a gal who is not too ashamed to admit she has pretended to be Princess Leia Organa fighting off Imperial Storm Troopers and Jabba the Hut (and that was just last week!) –

I am thrilled to say that I will not only be in attendance at the concert tonight….I will be filming the exhibits and conducting audience interviews on behalf of Greatest City of All and my movie site, FlickChick.TV.

Seriously…..I’m happier than a Wookiee with a cookie. Just sayin’.

According to the event website:

Through each musical piece, audiences will experience the key themes, characters and story elements of the epic Star Wars saga from a new perspective. Taking a truly remarkable excursion into the heart of a galaxy far, far away.

A true multi-media experience, “Star Wars: In Concert” features a giant, specially constructed LED screen — one of the largest screens ever taken on tour — onto which the newly edited film sequences will be projected and synchronized to a live performance of music from John Williams’ thrilling scores.

I was excited to learn that Anthony Daniels, the actor who portrays C-3PO in all six films, will introduce each segment of the the two-hour show, guiding audiences through the Star Wars story in a fresh and exciting way.

This entirely new way to experience the epic Star Wars story is sure to enthrall film fans, music fans and Star Wars fans of ALL ages.

Yep, that means YOU Luke….and that wacky father of yours too!
