Last week I set out on a bike ride from West Des Moines to downtown Des Moines to watch the Iowa Cubs play an afternoon baseball game.
It was a hot day with real feel temperature of 100 degrees. We had about a 30 minute ride and we made it to Grays lake where we rested and hydrated. There were a lot of people out walking around the lake and a hand full of people trying to stand up paddle board around the lake. It turns out you can rent boats, SUP, and other equipment there at Grays lake.
After the short rest we headed into downtown and stopped for lunch at High Life Lounge which is just across from the baseball park. If you have never been I highly recommend checking out this wonderful establishment. when you walk in you feel like you have stepped into the 70’s. There are no fancy beers (if your looking for good micro brews head next door to the El Bait shop) just the standard domestic beers and great food. You have to try the bacon wrapped tater tots.
After the game, we stopped for a few beers before heading back home. When we were starting back home the thunder storms and heavy rain began to fall. We stopped and ran into another bar to take cover and wait out the rain. After the rain had passed we were ready to get back on the bikes and finish our ride.
It turns out that someone decided to steal my bike. Unfortunately, this was the only time I didn’t lock my bike. It was raining and we where in a hurry to get out of the rain. Understandably, I was pretty upset. I have only owned the bike for 2 months and someone decided to take it from me. It is my fault for not locking the bike up and I have learned a lesson.
No matter how small the city, there are always people looking to take advantage of you.
