If there is one place in Columbus that I recommend (and eat at) more than anywhere else, it’s Katzingers, and the delectable delicatessen, located at 3rd and Livingston in German Village, is celebrating 25 years of feeding the masses.
The anniversary celebration will be from 6-9pm on Thursday, October 1st and will provide food, drinks, drawings and some “surprises.” There’s a $5 admission, which will be donated to Columbus Cancer Clinic, and Katzinger’s will match up to $2,500 of donations. You can RSVP at (614) 228-3354 or by email to RSVP@katzingers.com.
Owner Diane Warren wrote this in the event announcement:
When my former partner, Steve Warren, and I opened Katzinger’s October 1, 1984 we figured it would just be a little deli. Not long into this adventure it came to me – Deli’s are the universal leveler where everyone is the same. Rich or poor, professor or auto mechanic, a student, grandmother or the President of the United States? It makes no difference. You are all the magical wonderful deli customers that have made these 25 years so rewarding.
As their website points out, Katzingers has “outlasted at least 4 recessions, 3 wars, the birth and death of City Center, the gradual near-deterioration and the optimistic regeneration of downtown.” And anyone who’s ever been inside at lunchtime can guage from the long lines that it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Katzinger’s is probably best known for their reuben and their retail – and the PICKLES!
I have yet to find a sandwich as amazing as “Kahrl’s Killer Club” – Oven roasted turkey breast, honey ham, Applewood smoked bacon, Vermont white cheddar, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on toasted hand sliced challah – or egg salad as good as that that comes on “Becker’s Belt ‘Em” – alongside Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on rye. Not to mention the other 70+ sandwiches they offer.
I first discovered Katzinger’s back in March when I attended a wine and cheese tasting. The quality of food, the passionate people and the fun atmosphere have kept me coming back religiously.
Just look how happy I am when I’m at Katzingers – fellow GCOA writers Michelle and Jason look pretty happy, too!

So stop by the celebration! Not only do you help a great cause and get to eat some tremendous food (enjoyed by President Clinton and countless other celebs) but you also get to be in the company of Katzinger’s super sweet owner, Diane, her tremendous staff and the great customers (myself included) who make it all possible.
