Available Light wants to take you to “Church”

With a title like “Church,” you probably expect a play ABOUT church, or maybe taking place IN a church… but Available Light’s new show, Church, is, well, a Church sermon… sort of – and it will put the convictions of the religious and the non-religious to the test.

The director Matt Slaybaugh said it best – “Every show we do is odd, but we don’t know how people are going to react because this show is odd in a different way.”

The play kicks off in pitch black with an uncomfortably long voiceover personally calling you out on all of your flaws and faults, which are, it turns out, exactly the same as everyone around you.

From there on, four rather liberal Christian reverends, played by Acacia Duncan, Eleni Papaleonardos, Ian Short, and Kate Watts, lead the “sermon,” sharing their own past and present struggles and leading the audience in prayer, song and dance.

The actors performances were spectacular, as frequent Available Light-goers have already come to expect.

I can only imagine that every single person who sees Church will have a unique experience – some will feel uncomfortable, some will laugh, some will feel spiritual, and some might just plain hate it – but it’s an experience worth having.

On the way out of the Riffe my fiance looked at me and summed up what I think a lot of people were thinking, “I kept waiting for the hook.”

Every performance is “pay what you want” and takes place at Studio 2 in the Vern Riffe Center at 77 South High Street. For more info, check out AVLT’s website or call 614-558-7408.

  • We just added a podcast (which you can download or view as a video with photos) which features that actors, director, and playwright, as well as a couple of excerpt from the play.

    Enjoy!
  • Whoa....interesting review Cheryl. This might be one evangelical evening that I'll
    have to check out.

I've yet to see an Available Light Theatre show, but have read much about them and look forward to my first experience. Supporting independent theatre groups, productions and artists such as these is so important, and we are lucky here in Columbus to have so many choices and opportunities to do so.
