R.I.P. Columbus Destroyers… and the AFL

R.I.P. Destroyers… and the rest of the Arena Football League. Despite months of trying, Columbus Destroyers co-owner and Chairman of the AFL Executive Committee Jim Renacci and other AFL team owners were unable to come up with a plan to reconfigure the league’s financial model.

From yesterday’s Dispatch:
“At this point, we’re suspended indefinitely until we come up with the next plan… When you have 22 different owners in 17 ownership groups, it’s very difficult to get a supermajority on most any plan,” Renacci said.

The AFL has yet to acknowledge this on their site – the most recent post being from April, showing hopes of league revitalization. Team owners had voted back in December to cancel the 2009 season and take time to improve the league.

The Destroyer’s website is already down. (It might have been down for the canceled 2009 season, too – I’ve never checked it before.) It’s like they never were here to begin with *dun dun dun*
