“Friday night and the lights are low, looking out for the place to go where they play the right music, get in the swing?” Well then, you should go see Mamma Mia. Any night this week, actually.

Last night marked the opening of a six-day run of the national tour of Mamma Mia at the Ohio Theatre. The musical, which debuted on stage in 1999, was recently made into a movie staring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and other people I don’t remember. (I didn’t see it.)

The story centers around Sophie (played by Liana Hunt) on the eve and day of her wedding.

On her quest to discover the identity of her father, Sophie invites 3 men from her mother’s (played by Michelle Dawson) past to the island they last visited 20 years ago for the wedding.

The musical features 22 songs from ABBA, a huge Swedish pop/dance group active from 1972-1982 including hits such as “Dancing Queen” and, of course, “Mamma Mia.”

It’s a fun show. Audience members from 15 to 50 were dancing in their seats to the irresistibly catchy tunes. Surprisingly, the songs fit pretty well within the story’s plot. “Thank you for the Music,” ABBA!

If you’re one of those theatre-goers who likes to leave before the ovation to beat traffic, you might want to reconsider and stick around til the curtain drops for this shop. A three-song medley of ABBA tunes after the show will have you dancing in your seat like a Dancing Queen.

Tickets range from $32.50 to $72.50 at Broadway Across America, the Ohio Theatre box office (614-469-0939) and Ticketmaster outlets.

  • I think Mamma Mia is the best show I've seen on Broadway, and I've seen many. I bought tickets the day before on a whim- I was blown away it is the ultimate feel good show with great songs and dancing.
  • I saw both the play and the movie. Both were fab! I could see this musical over and over again. It brings a smile to your face and who doesn't love singing with a crowd? It's like Karaoke but not. Great review.
