Liz Lessner, the brains behind Columbus favorites Surly Girl Saloon, Tip Top Kitchen and Betty’s, has done it again. Tonight marked the opening of Dirty Frank’s Hotdog Palace, a gourmet hotdog restaurant/bar located on 4th Street in downtown Columbus. Crowds filled up the small space and waited outside in a huge line for a chance to try the dogs.

With 20 unique topping options ranging from sour cream + olives to beef brisket + BBQ sauce, Dirty Frank’s has something for everyone. Almost all of the ‘dogs can be made vegetarian or vegan, too. And at $3 a pop, you can’t help but try more than one.

Beverage choices range from floats and slushies to a wide alcoholic selection (currently on tap: PBR, Columbus Brewing Company Summer, Bells Oberon, Brooklym Pennant ‘55 Ale, Great Lakes Independence Ale, Dogfish Head 60 Min IPA, Troegs Troegnator Double Bock and South Tier Creme Brule Stout) along with 15 custom cocktails.

The appropriately ketchup-and-mustard colored space is adorned with neat artwork and provides a hip, fun atmosphere for lunch or a drink.

I tried two different hot dogs: The Classy Lady, which has cheese sauce and potato chips and The Nicola, with Tzatziki sauce and greek relish. Both good, the latter=amazing.

As you can see, I was clearly pleased with my selections.

All in all, super affordable, absolutely delicious, and a fun experience. When was the last time YOU had a hotdog with something cooler than ketchup?

(Speaking of ketchup… and the ketchup/mustard themed restuarant… it seems me and @JodyNColumbus dressed for the occasion)

    Dear Lessner Empire,

It was a fun evening out last night. Decent price for good food...couple comments -please put some char on the dogs, both regular and veggie alike. Not a fan of boiled, it just needs that something extra (carcinogens, lol?) Maybe when this new c-bus haunt isn't slammed we can have an option for slapping it on the grill for a few min.

Maybe some other sides available other than fried or cheesy...potato salad, slaw. These things will still keep for a while in the fridge. And some dessert too, need some pumpkin love, ya'll!

Bring in Elevator Brewery's Dark Horse (PLEEEEASE!) There's CBC's IPA on tap, but would love to see equal spotlight on another C-bus proud brewery. (gack! IPA - not on my prefered style of beer list, lol).

Cute eclectic place - I sincerely hope the area around it revitalizes and that the social media buzz will continue to drive traffic when the grand opening buzz dies down. It's a bit out of the way of night life, arts and sporting events but the PARKING is FAB! That was an unexpected blessing.

I'd love to see a punch card sampling each type of dog and maybe you get the t-shirt (hint, hint) when you run the gauntlet!

Looking forward to seeing how everything develops on the menu and in the space itself.

It's a great place to stop for a quick bite on the way to somewhere. For now, Dirty Franks is a topic of conversation for me. Tip top and Surly continue to draw us for its menu diversity and its fun "sit and stay a while" feel. We'll probably stop by once a month or so.

    Love,
A devoted Empire fan, avid Surly Girl and c-bus buzzmaker
