315 Construction = teh suck

Starting Monday, June 15, Columbus commutes for many became a little more chaotic.

traffic-sucks

The Ohio Department of Transportation has closed down the following entrance ramps on 315 northbound for construction:

Lane Avenue entrance ramp to SR 315 north
I-670 east to SR 315 north
Goodale Boulevard to SR 315 north
Olentangy River Road to SR 315 north.

These entrance ramps will remain closed until ODOT completes the project in October of this year. (LOLZ – we’ll see about that date.) Drivers can still access SR 315 north by using the I-670 west ramp or Ackerman Road entrance ramp. (via ODOT)

I had to fight with this re-route for the first time yesterday, and it sucked. Delayed me by 30 full minutes. Avoid it if you can. WTF do you need in Powell, anyway? HUH?!

AND DON’T FORGET: once you manage to get ON 315, the speed limit most of the way is only 45MPH during this construction and there are cops EVERYWHERE, so watch your speedometer closely! Cruise control is your best friend.

  • Oh yes, I am all about the passenger rail. I can think of no better way to start my morning than NOT having to drive to work. It would be incredible to just be a passenger, reading or tweeting and enjoying the ride.

Definitely with you on this one Walker.
  • I drove on it tonight for the first time this week, and didn't think it was that bad. Traffic was a little slow at 45mph for those three miles, but otherwise it was fine.

What I'm more bothered by is the fact that no one flinches at spending $24 million on three miles of minor road maintenance work, but so many torches and pitchforks come out whenever we start talking about investing in passenger rail.

There's a great existing rail line that runs parallel to 315 that would be a great alternative to driving up and down this stretch of road every day. And when existing infrastructure is used for passenger rail it keeps the cost very low. We could have something very similar to the Music City Star running through that area for a very small dollar-per-mile ratio.

    Bring it on! :D
